Participants in all areas: Entrepreneurs, Non for profit advocates, Lifestyle and health, Tech & Innovations and Education amongst other fields created a vibrant audience eager to share, network and pitch within their questions to seize opportunity.
Panel discussion with Q&A from the audience. Photo Credit: Janis Buongermino
Moderator, Emily Taffel-Cohen (founder and co-owner of Mugsy PR), led the conversation by inquiring the panel about: Biggest pitching pet peeves, Best day and time to pitch, Pitches that have stood out, How do YOU prefer to be pitched What makes the perfect PR package and Pay 2 play vs authentic editorial, and others. This allowed to harvest a few general notions throughout the panel:
  • Information must relate to a local concern, involve people, and denote implications to the community.
  • Means of communication prevail within social media and email.
  • It’s all about relationship building, making sure to review the person, do your homework, throw them a compliment.
Dia Ryan (Broadcaster at The New Hits 97.3 of Cox Media Group), encouraged the audience to seek if their product is a great fit to create that symbiotic relationship. Provide a reason why it’s beneficial for both parties remembering demographic, been sincere and genuine. Local local local, people people people, is a must for Marie Speed (Boca magazine/Group Editor JES Publications). The audience was very attentive and adapted the media request to incorporate these tips into their questions at the Q&A sharing new ideas and projects all led by women. Another outline by Pedro Heizer (Managing Editor- The Boca Raton Tribune/online and print), stated that more then send a broad pitch out, personalize your request. Might not make it to print but may be considered for online exposure. Keep in mind that television is always open for last minute stories according to Miranda Christian (Reporter WPTV). If your story revolves around a particular individual and their success, you might not have a lot of options but you are not out of them, Brian Bandell (South Florida Business Journal), voiced their consideration to outstanding profiles. This workshop turned out to be just the fuel any women can benefit from. The AWCSF encourages members and non-members to keep an eye on future events as they are continuously working to provide innovative and pragmatic sessions for all industry communications needs.  For more info or media questions please email: Julia Batres  at info@www.awcsouthflorida.org Watch replay Facebook Live of Women in Communications: How to Pitch the Media
