Join us on Thursday, April 15, from 5 PM -6 PM as we honor our April 2021 outstanding communicator, Carolina Gonzalez, for helping seniors sign up for the COVID-Vaccine. We will also be celebrating our National Chapter, AWC 112 Years of Women Empowerment.
Carolina Gonzalez is a mother of three and a middle school STEAM and Entrepreneurship teacher. She is a graduate of Lynn University’s College of International Communication. In December of 2020, at the beginning of the COVID-19 vaccine rollout, it became clear that the appointment booking systems in place would not provide equitable access to the seniors who intended to use them. At this time, she began connecting with seniors to secure highly sought-after COVID-19 vaccine appointments. In January of 2021, while searching for information to assist others, she joined and then was invited to serve as a moderator for the Facebook group, “South Florida-COVID-19 Vaccination Information.”
Gonzalez serves as one of several moderators and volunteers who pour hours of their own time. Her efforts continued throughout all stages and eligibility groups of the vaccine rollout. She continued to connect individuals to confirmed appointments and shifted her efforts to share real-time, up-to-date vaccine opportunities and verified information on the Facebook group. In February of 2021, she began curating up-to-date statewide vaccine appointment information via a live document, State of Florida COVID-19 Vaccination Information, circulated widely throughout the state. Mia Russo Stern, Jenn Greenberg, Kimberly Merchant, and fellow volunteers supported this effort. The live document has been updated and maintained to reflect the most up-to-date statewide opportunities organized by the county. On March 10th, 2021, Gonzalez hosted a Facebook Live event to share tips on using the live document to determine eligibility and where to go. Throughout her volunteer effort, she has made meaningful connections with and partnered with local community leaders to connect hundreds of individuals to various South Florida pop-up vaccination events. Presently, she continues to work alongside like-minded volunteers who work to continuously break down barriers individuals may face in the process of securing a COVID-19 vaccine.

The Association for Women in Communications South Florida (AWCSF) invites the local community to their 4th Annual Holiday Party at the blue, Boca Raton Resort Tuesday, December 17th from 5:30 PM -8 PM to benefit 4Kids of South Florida.
In 2016 AWCSF hosted its Meetup with a Purpose honoring 4Kids at The Blue, Boca Raton Resort. Since then it’s has been an annual holiday Meetup raising funds and awareness for 4Kids.
4KIDS is propelled by the vision of a home for every child. Whether that is a child removed from their home for the first time, siblings who need to stay together, a young mom in an unplanned pregnancy who needs a refuge, or a young adult who needs a place to belong, 4KIDS is there with hope and homes.

South Florida’s very own Karyn Turk, former Mrs. Florida (2016), TV Host, Social Media, Radio Personality, Producer and Actress has set her mind on a new challenge. To become Champion of the year for Best Buddies.
Anthony Kennedy Shriver founded Best Buddies in 1989, fomenting friendships among individuals with and without intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). He first reached out to his college peers to come together and broaden the experiences that people with IDD could be exposed to. This volunteer movement makes one-to-one friendships possible along with employment, leadership development, and inclusive living for individuals with IDD.
As part of the program, Karen has been paired with a high school student named Ethan Litman. “He is a rock star!” she claims. Someone that is a little bit older than her son and such a great journey. Ethan is instrumental in creating awareness for the program and embraces his differences which converts into a powerful thing. He has aspirations to go into the military. An athlete for the Special Olympics within bowling and track and field.
It’s not all about giving, this can be selfish as well. Having the opportunity to meet this kid has changed her perspective and this is not about what you give but what you get in return which can be life-changing.
Karen remembers her motivation behind Mrs. Florida she recalls not seen herself as a pageant girl. Her Jewish mother would have been like what are you doing? And the reason to participate was to gain access to an incredible platform that allowed to create awareness towards organizations in need.
This time her goal is to bring more and more awareness. Best Buddies gives her a purpose, a drive, a goal and a reason to work harder. Being in a contentious media environment, she thrives to focus on what is positive. What can make your life better?
The IDD community served by Best Buddies includes people with Down syndrome, autism, Fragile X, Williams syndrome, cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, and other undiagnosed disabilities
Every little bit counts, a person sent a handbag for her birthday party to auction, by looking into her birthday petition. This is a job to be done in sync, we are all in this together. The idea behind everything is learning how to be inclusive in this world.
What makes you a better adult? Been exposed to people with different needs. Best Buddies is a charity over and above. As part of her plan as Champion for this organization, she formulating an increased exposure of the charity to high net worth entrepreneurs.
Some CEO’s within South Florida have no idea of the organization and its program. Our community has the potential to step up. Karen definitely sees an opportunity to raise the bar.

Helping someone with daily needs. Look out for the most common status: Overwhelmed. For years we have overseen the value and lack of incentive for caregivers within all households. Going through a healing process due to illness, injury or disability is not a one-person task, this is surrounded by individuals that facilitate our recovery and sustainability. We are all bound to become a person in need of care or a provider without even been prepared.
Regardless of the process that you require recovery off, the focus will be mainly placed on the individual suffering the illness. But as a primary rule of survival, just as when you hear the flight attendant on every aircraft, one must place the breathing mask on ourselves before helping others.
How do we assure and support caregivers for the wellbeing of those in recovery? Recognizing their status is very important, providing incentives and motivation could be one.
Caregivers asking for help will reflect on the care provided to your loved one. Part of being taken care of is the feeling of guilt, having help for providing assistance can reattribute a sense of relief to the person in recovery. Making time for yourself is always overseen, but crucial to providing the best support.
In our South Florida community, we encounter many exemplary individuals that look after their loved ones. According to Family Caregiver Alliance *Upwards of 75% of all caregivers are female, and may spend as much as 50% more time providing care than males. [Institute on Aging. (2016). Read How IOA Views Aging in America.] As women supporting women the Association of Women in Communications South Florida (AWCSF), promotes awareness towards this service.
One association looking into this matter and focusing on the 5.5 million caregivers caring for former or current military personnel in the U.S* and stressing the fact that 9 in 10 caregivers of veterans are female and 70% provide care to their spouse or partner is One Life to Live Foundation.
Increased stress or anxiety, sleep deprivation are only a few of the issues they look to support women with. Daphnee Uter, Pamela Black, Yolanda Brown and Arie Lewis former veterans honorably discharged have set their minds on giving back to the support system that allowed them to adapt to their civilian lives. As each gathers different serving stories that affected their well being and families, who they wish to recognize and assure that all caregivers for veterans are supported.
The Association of Women in Communications South Florida will continue to deploy efforts towards our caregivers and their recognition for the wellbeing of their loved ones.

One Life to Live Foundation
One Life to Live Foundation, 501(3)C non-profit organization founded in 2019 by Daphnee Uter, Pamela Black, Yolanda Brown and Arie Lewis. Four Women Veterans, realized that most Women Veterans were underserved and caregivers, in general, tend to neglect themselves as they care for others. Understanding the unique needs of Veterans and their caregivers, the Founders decided they needed to be a source of support for positive change among this demographic. A day of respite and retreat to refocus on the individual needs. To learn about self-care and gain a better understanding of what our body requires to maintain a healthy lifestyle is just what caregivers and Women Veterans need. Self-identified as a professional volunteer, daughter of her father’s patriotic bloodline dating as far back as the Revolutionary War (Dr. Henry Skilton) boasting a never-ending chronicle of reinvention, Carole Wilson is a women of determination, focus and values with the personal motto – Success is not how much you have but how much you give.
Her story begins in Massachusetts where she studied at Lasell College and earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education with a Psychology minor at Southern Connecticut State University and Quinnipiac University. While juggling a job and children she still managed to turn that minor into a full Psychology degree.
Fearlessly reinventing herself, she studied Interior design in 1970 by mail correspondence in New York (our current version of online studies). Homework was tough-going, but she became ASID certified. This paved the way for her joining the renowned furniture company, Miller & Rose for four years where she became the company’s #1 salesperson. Her expertise was required for sales training all through the states of Virginia, North & South Carolina.
She had always focused on raising the bar and looking for something different to be done. Her next adventure would come at Roanoke at Capitol Broadcasting in Sales for radio. Her self development continued to grow as she enrolled in Roanoke community college for Graphology or handwriting expert (which would later come in handy serving attorneys and/or private parties).
While handling a particular age demographic (25-54), she took pride in creating innovative proposals for advertisements with her client companies that set her apart from her peers by generating continuous sales ranging from $50,000 to $3,000,000.
After a long and successful career, in 1994 Carole traveled to Florida to be with her parents. Once again adapting a new skill set, she joins Merrill Lynch as a private secretary and later moves to Oppenheimer & Company as financial advisor. Sadly in 2008, she suffers a car crash waiting at a traffic light that radically altered her life path towards joining Boca Nursing Services as office manager. Predictably, she took it upon herself to do everything and be on call.
A decade later, she remains focused on her many causes and working independently as a Graphologist, recently participating in the investigation of authenticity for a last will and testament determining inheritance from a wealthy Asian businessman, through handwriting verification.
She served on the selection committee for the Junior League of Boca Raton earning Volunteer-of-the-Year/the “Go-Getter Award” from the Women Prosperity Network. Carole personifies the strength of a woman and her potential.
An avid networker, she has belonged to both the Boca Raton & Delray Beach Chambers of Commerce. Through her participation in various associations she seeks to support education for girls without access. She loves being counted alongside loving men and women who care about America. Her expertise in raising funds is only excelled by the joy she receives from giving back. Being involved is very important, it keeps you young, she points out. While working hard all her life, retirement only comes partly as she dedicates her time to helping others.

Helping always starts with awareness. This past Tuesday, November 27th we were able to gather and learn from the Brain Bowl organizations on how to support this cause that is projected to affect 14 million americans by 2050. This is also represents the 6th leading cause of death in the United States, killing more than breast cancer and prostate cancer.
The Boca Brain Bowl Alzheimer’s luncheon Raises awareness and necessary funding for education, research and treatment of this insipid disease. Their annual luncheon is to be held this coming April 12, 2019 at Boca West Country Club.

During Breast Cancer awareness month, we have been able to witness support provided by the professional community. RE/MAX Services has stepped up to this month by gathering the top talent in Real Estate of Palm Beach County in a panel discussion to share their challenges and success in the industry.
The event was beautifully colored in pink, starting by the assistant’s attire, following the decor. Royal Palm Polo Club by Toll Brothers, provided a pleasant and luxurious environment with a gratifying feel surrounded by a luminous hall.
The panel exemplified how challenges are a part of women’s lives. Four strong women exposed their stories led by David Serle, Broker REMAX/Services.
Kynse Leigh, Broker of RE/MAX Dreams a double organ transplant recipient turned her experience into an organization Don’t burry good organs INC. while building a strong career and operating a Boutique Firm in West Florida, that stands out for it’s particular design, thanks to her professional Design background.
“You can’t go somewhere professionally that you haven’t gone personally”. Leanna Fruin, Broker of Engle and Volkers, outlines how when personally affected by a close friend’s struggle she went from not knowing to becoming an advocate in a very short time. We need to find ways to help people that shut down. Her dedication and passion are part of her Multi property portfolio expertise.
Age or bank account balance are no parameter when learning from Kristin Stampini, RE/MAX Services. In 10 years she has managed to overdo her life from scratch and is currently a top producer with 5 successful businesses. She defines motivation by identifying what you can do to make a difference in peoples lives.
The well known Senada Adzem, Douglas Elliman, luxury real estate expert and media contributor with over $1 billion sold joined the panel with great energy and enthusiasm identifying herself as a survivor not a victim of war in Bosnia. Her energy is contagious and glows over with market details of rising activity reflecting the best stats in 10 years for Palm Beach and best in 4 in Miami. A vivid advocate of Boca Raton. “It’s not just the weather, Yes the lifestyle but it’s the tax reform”, when referring to why it is the time to invest in Florida. Her focus and professionalism are eminent.
Survivors where recognized through the event with a heartwarming applause by the end of the panel, igniting strength.
All profits were destined to Go Pink Challenge at Boca Regional Hospital, for their Breast Cancer Foundation with all proceeds to be utilized for the purchase of technology to provide advanced Biopsy and Mammography.
